General
Melanotan I is a synthetic analog of α-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH), designed to activate melanocortin receptors, particularly MC1R, which plays a key role in melanin production. By stimulating melanogenesis, Melanotan I enhances the skin’s natural pigmentation, promoting a gradual and even tan without excessive sun exposure. Unlike Melanotan II, it is more selective in its action, focusing primarily on tanning effects and has been studied for its potential UV protection benefits and skin pigmentation disorders like vitiligo.
